Did you ever wonder about the phenomena
of “Christmas in July”? We as
Americans have at the very least heard of this phrase, if not seen a special
sale in the local department store, festival in a town, or special flavor at
the ice cream shop. Why is this Christmas in July so appealing? Some may say it’s
to escape the heat, but after this past winter’s two blizzards and our extremely
mild summer by the lake I can honestly say I don’t think that is the case, at
least not in western New York. Why it is vastly celebrated beyond attempting to
meet some consumerist need in our secularized society is in fact still a
mystery to me. Yet as I contemplate this uniquely American custom it causes my
heart to reflect on a series of truths of our faith that, during this ordinary
time in the liturgical calendar, can serve as wonderful springboards for prayer
and meditation as we continue along our summer.
The word became flesh and dwelt among us through the fiat of
Mary.
Do we say fiat to the Lord’s
will in our lives? Are we running to the Word made Flesh in Adoration, opening
our hearts to be His dwelling? Let’s make our Christmas in July a reflection on
how we live a life of love in our sacramental lives.
