The Gift of Motherhood

As we anticipate the celebration of Mother’s Day this Sunday, let’s take a moment to thank God for mothers everywhere.  The mother’s presence is truly irreplaceable, and maternity is the gift and treasure of every woman, whether she is a biological mother or a spiritual one.   Mothers are so beautiful because they love so much, and the maternal instinct is present in the soul of every woman.  Mothers give life, and they manifest God’s tenderness to the world.
As a woman discerning religious life, I’m so thankful for the gift of motherhood, for the gift of my own mother, and for the gift and privilege of being a woman and a spiritual mother.  My mother planted  the seed of my faith and of my vocation, and has nourished it all these years. I pray that my vocation is a gift not only to me, but to her and to those many souls that I carry in my heart, to whom I hope to help give birth to Christ in their hearts.  To be a mother is to run to the small and the weak, the helpless, and to help them know they are authentically loved and that they bring authentic joy to the heart.
Our Blessed Mother is a beautiful model for all mothers, combining the radiance of biological motherhood, and spiritual motherhood and virginity in her one person.  May we learn from her how to love more, and how to be better mothers.

“The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral - a dwelling for an immortal soul. The tiny perfection of her baby’s body.  The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to heaven. Only a human mother can.  Mothers are closer to God the creator than any other creature. God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation . . . What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this: TO BE A MOTHER” By Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty
